This is example of some of greatest tales discovered on way to another story.
I’d gone to Brown County, Ohio to research a Major James Curry. I discovered through a Daniel Evans of Georgetown, Ohio, I was researching wrong Major Curry! Then Dan brought out a 1788 German bible and told me the incredible story of his relative from Bethel, Ohio, in Clermont County, NANCY EVANS! Dan told me the 1805 story chronicled n 1880 account, in which Nancy Evans had trial as a witch; hundred and ten pound Nancy weighed against 71/2” by 5″, 2.4 pound 1788 bible which
Dan presented to me. After Nancy cleared of witchcraft charge of Hildebrand daughters (one of which created papermache witch, showing how Nancy Evans appeared to them), Nancy continued to be harassed by Bethel inhabitants until Justice of The Peace Sam Beck (the real hero of the story) escorted Nancy (with the 1788 Bible Beck had given to her) from Clermont to Brown County to live with relatives Elijah and Lucinda Evans of Georgetown, Ohio.
The shock was when I was shown in opening pages of worn bible two cut-paper love charms created by Evans’ first-born daughter Phebe whom as child had been taught by Nancy Evans “The Magic Arts”! The family said they had taken in what they believed was old innocent woman who turned out to possess some extraodinary powers!
In these framed pieces, Jim tells the story of each object and, importantly, preserves his original research and documentation. In many instances, the story concludes on the back of the frame. In cases where the similarity of content may cause confusion for viewers, the beginning of the story is highlighted.
